Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about following this charming family go about their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to evolve comedy past its long-running sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
