Arrangements for Trump-Putin Summit Delayed Shortly Following Budapest Negotiations Suggested
Currently exist "no plans" for US President President Trump to meet Russia's Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has stated.
Last Thursday the US president indicated he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to examine the ongoing hostilities.
A planning session between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for this week - but the White House said the two had had a "productive" discussion and that a meeting was no longer "necessary".
The administration withheld any more details on why the talks had been put on hold.
Earlier Events
The US president had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the Oval Office.
Certain accounts indicated his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with sources claiming Trump had pushed him to relinquish significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a agreement with Russia.
However, on Monday Trump supported a truce plan supported by Kyiv and European leaders to halt the conflict on the present positions.
"Freeze the lines where it stands," he stated.
Russia has consistently objected against freezing the current line of contact.
The Russian government was only interested in "permanent resolution", Lavrov stated on Tuesday, implying that halting hostilities would only amount to a short-term truce.
Political Perspectives
The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities demanded attention, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Moscow's terminology for a set of maximalist demands that include the recognition of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its European partners.
The Ukrainian president commented discussions about the battle positions were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to prevent dialogue.
He also said the only topic that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the delivery of extended-range arms to Ukraine.
Strategic Factors
The Russian president's unscheduled call with Trump recently preceded rumors that the United States was planning to provide long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit Russian territory.
The Ukrainian leader said it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to participate in talks. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had proven to be a "valuable contribution" in international relations", he commented.
