Jennifer Lawrence States Discussing Donald Trump Would ‘Intensify Divisions’ Dividing the Country Apart
The star has revealed that she finds it inappropriate appropriate to comment publicly against the Trump presidency, worried it could intensify divisive discussions and deepen rifts across the country.
‘I’m Unsure If It’s Wise’, Says the Actress
Speaking with media, the Oscar winner commented, “During the first Trump administration, I felt like I was moving hastily without clear direction. But experience has shown, election after election, celebrities do not make a difference whatsoever on electoral choices.”
The actor went on, “What’s the point? I’m just sharing my opinion on something that’s going to heighten conflict that’s ripping the country apart.”
Changing Allegiances
The actress has admitted freely about voting for both Republican and Democratic candidates in past elections. Growing up with conservative Republicans in Kentucky, she supported the Republican nominee in the 2008 election then moving to the Democrats and revealing she realized during President Obama’s term that supporting the GOP was opposing her personal freedoms as a female citizen.
Previous Comments
In 2015, she stated that Trump winning the presidency would be “a disaster” and publicly supported Joe Biden in the 2020 election. During the most recent election, she gave her endorsement to Kamala Harris, “as I believe she’s a strong contender and I know that she will take all necessary steps to protect women’s health rights.”
Industry Position
Jennifer Lawrence was supported by most of Hollywood in her rejection of Trump as a candidate for re-election, but the lack of leverage public figures have over the voting intentions was underscored by his election win.
“The second term appears changed,” noted Lawrence regarding Trump’s presidency. “Because he stated his intentions. We knew what he did for the previous administration. He was explicit. And that’s what we chose.”
Current Projects
Lawrence is discussing Die, My Love, director Lynne Ramsay’s project in which she stars as a new mother who deals with her mental health in a remote area. During a press conference for the project in Venice, she spoke about the conflict in Gaza: “I feel fear. It’s mortifying. What’s happening is no less than a humanitarian crisis and it’s terrible.”
Broader Concerns
She continued by saying that she was disappointed by “the disrespect in the conversations of American politics currently and how that is going to be commonplace to the kids now. It’s going to be standard to them that politicians lie.”
She aimed to shift anger about the issue to leaders rather than actors and artists. “Stay focused on who is responsible,” she said, in what many took to be a reference to the then-recent pledge supported by numerous Hollywood professionals to refuse engagement with specific industry bodies.
Personal Connections
Lawrence, who received an Academy Award at a young age for her performance in her breakout movie, is generating Oscar buzz for her performance in the new film. Although Lynne Ramsay has denied the story being understood as one of post-birth struggles and psychological distress, Lawrence shared that she connected with elements of her character’s journey after the delivery of her youngest child, not long after production wrapped.
“There was concern regarding my baby,” she explained, “envisioning every negative outcome, and then questioning everything that I was doing. I was receiving counseling, but I began using a treatment called Zurzuvae and I continued it for a short period and it made a difference.”
Career Moments
Jennifer Lawrence also spoke of the freeing requirement of shooting revealing sequences in the movie while she was some months pregnant and couldn’t work out.
“It feels nice,” she said, of being forced to cast off vanity. “Truly, I do have moments where I’m like, How exactly do I differ between me and a prostitute? But it doesn’t trouble me deeply.”
