Mikel Arteta has expressed concern that his team's pursuit for honors this season is being jeopardized by a worrying cycle of fitness setbacks and a grueling schedule.

Latest Squad Update

Star player Declan Rice did not travel for the midweek trip to Belgium due to illness. Meanwhile, attacker Leandro Trossard and center-back William Saliba remain unavailable.

There was, however, better news regarding Gabriel Jesus, with the South American forward added to their Champions League squad. He replaces the injured youngster Max Dowman, who suffered an ankle injury.

"Training, no because we lack time to train. But clearly the fact that you are without players, you are placing demands on other players more, there's a consequence to that and it's a really vicious cycle."

Dowman's issue is the most recent in a long list of fitness problems for the club. Since the start of last campaign, they have suffered 95 player absences, the second-highest total in the Premier League.

Extended Absentees

• Defenders Cristhian Mosquera and Gabriel Magalhães are not expected to return until the new year.
• Midfielder Kai Havertz still recover from knee and "needs more time," as stated by the boss.

Arteta rejected the idea that training intensity were to culprit, pointing to a shortage of time for sessions. He emphasized the strain on available players, some of whom have featured over 150 matches in two years.

Transfer Strategy

Despite a major summer spend exceeding £250 million, Arteta insisted the club is unlikely planning to dip into the winter recruitment market.

"Right now we're just focusing on bringing the players back and hopefully it will be a matter of weeks," he commented. "We know how crucial those coming weeks are going to be."

Next Challenge

The team suffered their first defeat in 18 games at the hands of Aston Villa, cutting their lead at the summit of the league to two clear points.

Focus now shifts to the European stage, where a sixth group-stage victory would virtually guarantee a top-eight finish. Winger Gabriel Martinelli could make history by scoring in a fifth straight consecutive European match.

"We are disappointed with the outcome, but we have to keep going," he stated. "This isn't like everything is going badly because we lost one game. So we stick together."
