Monte Cook along with Monte Cook Are Instructing Classes at Dungeon Master Academy
Since 2018, a specialized event organizer has been organizing deeply engaging experiences where expert DMs manage D&D games in ancient fortresses in England and at an American castle venue. The comprehensive packages are especially popular among career game masters who infrequently find the chance to join in the game themselves, and they often look for guidance from the pros on topics ranging from improv and creating challenges to dealing with tough scenarios at the table.
In response, the coordinators began developing a structured way to address these questions, which led to the founding of the Dungeon Master Academy. The inaugural event is set for early January 2026 at Oglethorpe University.
“You can watch numerous digital guides on virtually any subject and acquire valuable insights, but the concept was that nothing truly replaces face-to-face interaction alongside fellow DMs, where real-time interaction with seasoned educators and your peers likely in comparable situations and aim to enhance their abilities,” stated Jason Carl.
Available Classes and Cost Levels
Dungeon Masters can opt for options ranging from just under $1,000 to $2.5K, according to the level of access they desire with the instructors. The starting package includes one of four courses:
- Core Techniques: Teaches the essentials of running D&D.
- Long-Term Game Planning: Is dedicated to designing extended campaigns.
- Universe Design: Emphasizes the crafting of environments.
- Career Building: Tailored to game masters who aim to explore more about the tabletop profession.
Each course includes multiple sessions of classwork spread over a weekend.
“The workshops are created so that you walk away with immediate practical outcomes, enhanced belief in your abilities, and numerous applicable methods,” Carl noted. “It's more than presentations and they’re not just static videos. These are sessions that you can participate in, absorb insights from, and then head back to your table the following week and put into practice in your local game.”
Professional Teachers
Most classes are instructed by duo of instructors. Universe creation is guided by the founder of Monte Cook Games and a renowned campaign designer, together instructing the skill of universe design.
Professional development includes four different teachers, such as a puzzle design specialist, an entertainment professional, and Hunter Fell. The expanded teaching staff is intended to offer targeted guidance to attendees with particular aims.
“Certain participants plan to create their own D&D actual play and share their stories with the world, some of them plan to produce and create new material,” Carl stated. “Others simply wish to ask, What's the path to be a DM at an event like an immersive experience? Which abilities that I need? Is it for everyone?”
Premium Packages
A $1,500 enhanced option provides access to a introductory event, a starter kit, and a half-hour consultation appointment with an instructor. This represents the inaugural DMU session, though the team has previously run comparable workshops during breaks between campaigns at their premium gatherings.
“One could practically host an complete event just on office hours for career game masters,” Carl said. “I'm not certain if that’s the best use of each attendee's hours – In my opinion the coursework and the lab work is highly beneficial – but I suspect it’s going to be a highly favored parts of the program.”
The $2,500 premium option provides an 60-minute private session and the chance to run a game for a small group plus an instructor, who will then provide notes and coaching.
“The aim is for the instructor to evaluate whichever aspect is focused on: Hey I don’t do well with spontaneous decisions or I get blocked in certain battle scenarios. Can I run a situation for you and receive input on what my strengths and weaknesses are?” Carl said. “Or maybe they want to receive input and information on a definite universe that they’ve been developing.”
Next Steps
Responses from the first event will help determine subsequent DMU events. Carl said that possible changes could include increasing consultation time, extending the program to a longer period, or trying out varied class arrangements.
“I anticipate that we conduct these regularly,” Carl expressed. “I would love to see numerous academy events in a single year, in different cities, and in different countries. The feedback has been really terrific. We’re very happy with what we’re seeing and I feel it would be amazing to be able to do this in partnership with major events.”
