An extensive manufacturing complex located on the outskirts of Jakarta is addressing nuclear contamination after a government team detected traces of the dangerous element Caesium-137 at 22 production facilities within the site, which includes businesses shipping frozen marine products.

Investigation and Discovery of Contamination

Indonesian officials launched an investigation after the US Food and Drug Administration identified Caesium-137, a nuclear isotope, in a shipment of frozen coated prawns exported by an Indonesian firm.

The FDA released an warning instructing distributors and retailers to dispose of the goods and avoid selling it, even though the detected amount was far below the agency's intervention threshold. It added that the amount of Caesium-137 they had detected would not present an acute hazard to consumers.

The FDA explained: “The main health effect of concern after longer term, ongoing low dose exposure (for example through eating of polluted products or water over time) is an elevated risk of cancer, caused by harm to DNA within living cells.”

Extensive Contamination and Medical Checks

Radiation tests revealed at least twenty-two factories in the industrial area were affected. The official team did not name the twenty-one additional production facilities, but said they would immediately receive cleanup procedures conducted by the country's nuclear authority.

The environment minister declared that people living in strongly polluted areas would be moved until the site was decontaminated, adding that the well-being of the residents was the “main concern”.

Medical officials also performed checks on local employees and residents located close to the industrial estate, identifying 9 people who tested positive for contact to Caesium-137. These individuals were sent to a medical facility before being allowed to return home.

Decontamination and Isolation Measures
