The White Sox Sign Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on an Lucrative $34 Million Agreement.

In a significant move for their rebuilding roster, the American League club have officially added infielder Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract with the accomplished player.

Financial Terms and Added Benefits

The deal grants a $1 million signing bonus, issued within 30 days, combined with salaries of $16M for the upcoming season and $17 million for the following year.

Importantly, Murakami's compensation may grow based on award achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for being named the league MVP award.
  • $500K for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
  • $250,000 for finishing between fourth and tenth.
  • Another $250,000 for being named the Rookie of the Year honor.

His deal also stipulates that he cannot be assigned to the farm system without his consent and makes him a free agent at the end of the contract. Further benefits include a club-supplied interpreter and travel costs between Japan and the U.S..

Posting Fee and Team Legacy

As part of the transaction, Chicago is obligated to provide a compensation payment of $6,575,000 to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization are also entitled to a 15% cut of fifteen percent triggered incentive payments.

Murakami will become the fourth-ever Japanese-born to suit up for the White Sox, following reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu previously coached Murakami back in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, joins a promising group of offensive players in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are coming off a 60-102 season, placing last in the American League Central but representing a notable improvement from the prior campaign.

A two-time Central League MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is famous for a historic 2022 season where he belted 56 HRs, breaking the all-time record for a Japanese-born player formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.

His last year was shortened to 56 games due to an oblique injury. Even with recording 64 times, he batted .273 with 22 home runs and 47 driven in.

Over his career tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has accumulated a .270 career batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBIs, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 contests. Early in his career playing mostly at first, he has spent most of his time to third base.

International Pedigree

Murakami's heroics were on full display during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he drove in a game-ending two-base hit that scored two fellow Japanese stars for a dramatic 6-5 win. The very next day in the title match against the USA, he blasted a equalizing shot in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's eventual 3-2 victory.

The lefty slugger is slated to be formally introduced at a introductory event on Monday.
